WHAT IS BITE OF TEETH?
Bite of teeth — this is a certain ratio of the dentition of the lower and upper jaw when they close together. A dental bite can be anatomic and abnormal (pathological). In turn, the anatomic and pathological closure has its subspecies, we will talk about them below.
The abnormal (or pathological) dental occlusion — this is not only an aesthetic issue.
It affects many other points: enamel abrasion, the state of the gastrointestinal tract (due to the characteristics of chewing food), the appearance of neurological diseases.
The latter are due to the fact that when the jaw is not in the right position - unwanted tension accumulates in the muscles, which passes from the face to the neck - and this affects the state of many nerves and the spine.
We will figure out what an abnormal occlusion of teeth is, and also what a regular tooth bite is, and what are the ways to correct it if such a problem has already manifested itself.
WHAT IS THE ABNORMAL BITE OF TEETH?
Abnormal dental occlusion — this is the pathological ratio of the dentition of the upper and lower jaws.
Often, a pathological bite of the teeth is formed as a result of improper development of the jaws, bad habits, impaired posture, difficulty in nasal breathing.
It is characterized by a violation of muscle tone, chewing effectiveness, face proportions, breathing and speech defects.
TYPES OF PATHOLOGICAL BITE OF TEETH
The following types of bite are distinguished:
- Deep: in this case, the upper jaw seems to overlap the lower, which causes problems with the proper chewing of food, the pronunciation of some sounds. This type is corrected with the help of prolonged wearing of bracket systems, or with a surgical operation.
- Posterior: this is one of the options for a deep type of closure, when the upper jaw even more overlaps the lower. This type is strongly reflected in the aesthetic moment: the face becomes as if short, and with a smile the upper jaw is exposed to the gums. This type of malocclusion occurs in adults and children, it is quite common.
- Mesial: if in the previous types the upper jaw hangs, then in this case the picture is reversed: the lower jaw comes forward. This is because it is developing faster. As a result, the chin extends significantly, headaches, joint problems occur. This situation is more complicated, so an operation is often required, but sometimes it can be corrected with braces.
- Cross: in the name of problem is already laid its essence — rows of teeth when closing
as if they cross. The reason for this phenomenon is complications in milk teeth and even ear inflammation in childhood.
- Cross-bite defect — this is one of the most difficult problems that require long-term treatment and the same long period during which you need to maintain the result and control it so as not to get a rollback.
- Open: with the open type, the jaw closure does not occur because the individual parts of the dentition do not close together. If you look at the photo of a patient with an open type of closure, you will see that the intervals between the jaws are quite large - one of the reasons for this type is often rickets.

WHAT IS THE ANATOMIC BITE OF TEETH?
Anatomic bite - this is the physiological ratio of the dentition of the upper and lower jaw, characterized by maximum relaxation of the chewing muscles, as well as certain proportions of individual teeth between them. In other words, the jaws are located relative to each other without any serious defects affecting their work and the general appearance of the face.
There are four options for the correct location of the jaws: orthognathic occlusion, prenormal occlusion, direct occlusion and biprognatic occlusion.
The first type is called ideal: the upper row covers 1/3 of the lower, the incisors do not form additional cracks when closed.
The prognostic view suggests that the lower jaw comes forward a little, but there is a necessary closure, the load on the joints is permissible. In the photo of the correct bite of a person’s teeth, the differences with the previous version will not be very significant.
With the direct type, the front incisors touch each other with cutting surfaces, since the jaws themselves are parallel to each other.
Technically, it is believed that this is the normal kind, but it has its own undesirable features - so, with close contact of the dental crowns, their abrasion is much higher. That is, the load on the cutting part is still higher than it should ideally be.
With the biprognatic type of closure, the jaws are more advanced forward to the lips, but interact with each other in such a way that they do not cause any problems, normal closure occurs without additional mastication load.
It turns out that the wrong bite is a situation in which there will always be negative consequences for the patient. This discomfort, and pain, and the extra load that goes to the muscles - as a result, different body systems suffer, aesthetics are violated, there are risks of developing other diseases, complications.
IF THE WRONG BITE IS WHAT TO DO?
Since this defect leads to additional problems, the only right solution is to go to the doctor so that he selects an individual treatment plan and correct the problem.
For this purpose, they conduct a thorough examination and find out the causes of defects, their complexity, and also the peculiarities of the patient himself.
There are several ways to correct a bite of teeth:
- Braces— this is the first thing that comes to mind: braces mean special fixed orthodontic systems that help to cope with rather complex problems. From the very beginning, this is not a very comfortable solution for a patient: one needs to get used to braces, they are not very easy to care for, they require a lot of attention. But on the other hand, the result in difficult cases is much better than when corrected with simpler methods.
- Orthodontic plates: these are removable solutions that fix the dentition in the right position. Usually this correction with plates allows you to form the correct bite of teeth in children under 12 years of age, when tooth defects are not too pronounced. Plates, in the comparison with braces, are regularly removed for a while: when you need to brush your teeth or eat.
- Trainers: now it is one of the most modern methods of working with an undesirable situation. Trainers are soft plates that work with a large number of problems, including speech defects. The solution is suitable for both children and adults: during the day, soft plates are worn for about two hours, and then completely put them on at night.
- Occlusal splints (aligners) — transparent products repeat the shape of the jaw, but have a certain shift in position in the right direction. When the patient puts on the mouthpiece, it puts a little pressure on the dentition, thereby gradually shifting it. In the process of restoring the correct closure, a few drops will be needed: each subsequent one will improve the situation when the previous one is no longer working.
- Miotherapy — this is a way in which the patient performs special exercises that allow him to correct the situation by strengthening or weakening various muscles of the face. Such therapy is prescribed for children, and its complexity is that it requires patience, regular classes and constant monitoring by adults.

We’ll talk separately about such a method as surgical orthodontics - if the situation is difficult, then you can’t do without the help of a surgeon.
Surgical orthodontics include defect correction by osteotomy (maxillary and mandibular), as well as aesthetic genioplasty.
These are complex operations performed by the surgeon as a dentist, after which a recovery period is needed.
So, with an osteotomy, the surgeon moves the jaw, fixes them with splints or titanium plates, and all this is removed after the position of the jaws has already been fixed, and they will not return to their previous state.
Another solution for correcting a malocclusion is crowns and veneers. Their essence is that dental tissues are grinded under such elements, that is, the doctor can remove the protruding area and cover it with a more even plate that will not be knocked out of the general dentition.
This method is suitable only if the defect extends to several teeth and their position, but does not capture the joints, the position of the jaw itself. That is, usually the treatment will be carried out by the methods described above.
HOW MUCH DOES A CORRECTION OF TEETH OCCLUSION COST?
The more complicated the situation, the more expensive the price will be for correcting a pathological occlusion of teeth in children and adults, especially if surgical intervention is required.
But here it is important to choose the right clinic: many dentists unscrupulously overstate the cost of materials and work - and this is easy to do at the stage when the patient has been treated for a long time, and therefore does not have the opportunity to refuse the next offer.
If you do not want to be cheated, contact Lumi Dent for help. An honest approach, transparent pricing of dentistry, the choice of an individual solution taking into account the wishes of the client are the principles by which our clinics work.
Here are some variants of price offers:
- metal braces: 8999 UAH;
- system of braces from ceramics: from 19099 UAH;
- monocrystalline sapphirine braces: from 21599 UAH;
- internal (lingual) system: from 32999 UAH.
Since the price spread is significant, a few words should be said about each system.
Metal braces — this is a classic solution that is used to correct a bite of teeth very often. They are inexpensive, durable, reliable and do their job well. But such products require the most thorough hygiene, and they do not look very nice. If the aesthetic moment is not very worrying, it is quite possible to dwell on metal.
Ceramic braces are more preferable from an aesthetic point of view: the correct shade of ceramics goes well with tooth enamel, and is almost invisible against its background. The material is not painted, it serves well, it is slightly less durable than metal, but it will not be easy to break it.
Braces are made of artificial sapphire are even less noticeable on enamel: this is ideal if the appearance for a person is extremely important - for example, due to a certain profession. But sapphire braces require the most careful handling, constant care.
And the last option is lingual, internal braces: it’s clear from the name that they are placed on the inside of the dentition, that is, for others this decision will be invisible. This technology is the most complex, which cannot but affect the final price.
It is impossible to choose a method for treating a pathological bite in adults or children or a specific system: this requires professional knowledge, as well as a sophisticated diagnostic technique. If you encounter such a problem, Lumi-Dent dentists will carefully examine you and offer the best solution.

REASONS OF ABNORMAL OCCLUSION OF TEETH
The reasons for abnormal occlusion are many - some are formed before birth, others are laid in childhood, and still others are related to adulthood. In total, eight main causes of this problem can be identified - each of them is quite common.
Reason №1: genetic predisposition
If defects of such a plan are observed or observed by parents, it is likely that children will also encounter these problems. Genetic causes respond well to correction - the main thing is to see a doctor on time so that the program is selected at the right time and the treatment is not delayed.
Reason №2: underdeveloped dentition
The reason for this underdevelopment lies in the fact that the modern child does not get enough stress on the teeth, although initially and physiologically our jaw is sharpened to cope with complex tasks.
But here parents should be cautioned: you should not give any additional load on your own - instead of prophylaxis, you can get the opposite effect. It is best to observe the child from childhood with a dentist and adhere to the doctor's recommendations when there are certain risks. Then the correction of the wrong bite can be started on time, without waiting for major changes.
Reason №3: premature disposal of milk teeth
If the milk teeth are removed prematurely, the rest begin to shift, occupy voids - as a result, the development of the jaw does not occur correctly, and this already results in problems with the jaws. In the photo of a malocclusion of teeth in children, we often see the result of this very reason - early loss of primary teeth.
Reason №4: retention of teeth in the dentition
This is the opposite of the previous problem: if for some reason the teeth did not fall out in time, they take the place of the molars. The latter can make their way to the side - up to the point that the child has a double row of teeth: they are also called sharks. In this case, parents should not expect that something will change: even one such tooth is an occasion to immediately consult a doctor.
Reason №5: wisdom teeth
A correct and pathological bite is a problem that can come out much later than in childhood, and therefore there is such a reason.
It concerns adults already: most often wisdom teeth begin to erupt by the age of 14-25, although there are more cases when they appear much later, even after 30 years.
Since often there is not enough space for these teeth, they begin to move the rest - and where there was an absolutely even row, crowding of the incisors forms.
For many patients, these are sudden changes that surprise them very much: but the wisdom teeth are very “strong”, so they can significantly move the rest to win their place.

Reason №6: numerous health problems
There are diseases that, in our opinion, are not directly related to teeth, but nevertheless they affect how the jaws work in the future.
These include adenoids, various ORL diseases: the cause of the defect is often a banal chronic runny nose, in which air passes badly through the nose.
With such a problem, the upper jaw narrows, the space in it becomes smaller - as a result, the position of the teeth is disturbed.
Reason №7: wrong work of tounge
It is interesting that the bite is also associated with speech therapy problems: if the tongue is in the wrong position during pronunciation, over time it can push some of the teeth out of their correct position.
It is unlikely that many think about this reason, and not everyone believes that the muscles of the tongue are so strong, although this is so.
Reason №8: problems with the posture, supporting-motor system
This is already the more obvious reason, because we all know how the supporting-motor apparatus affects our body, nervous system and general well-being.
If somewhere something is located incorrectly, this will certainly affect all components of the device, and then it will affect the neck, jaw, and teeth.
WHERE TO TREAT AN ABNORMAL OCCLUSION?
Dental clinics Lumi-Dent in Kyiv offer their clients the most modern approach to correcting a pathological bite.

Separate orthodontists work with children, who have the appropriate qualifications and can find an approach to the most difficult child.
The work always begins with a thorough diagnosis, anamnesis: the proposed treatment options will depend on what the person is sick or sick.

The clinics use only hypoallergenic materials that are not able to cause rejection in the body, a negative reaction.
A team of doctors often works with one patient: therapists, orthodontists, surgeons - the more complicated the case, the more professionals participate in it to avoid possible errors and make the most effective decision.

ABNORMAL BITE OF TEETH IN CHILDREN
Correction of malocclusion in children is complicated by the fact that babies do not always withstand the level of responsibility that is required of them.
So it’s important for adults to understand: the bulk of the hygiene tasks, following the doctor’s instructions, will fall on them. You need to constantly monitor treatment - only in this case it will give the desired result.
Some problems should be corrected from childhood, others require expectations: you will understand this only after consulting with one of the experienced doctors of the pediatric dentistry department of Lumi-Dent.
ABNORMAL BITE OF TEETH IN ADULTS
It is simpler to treat adults: they tolerate operations easier, can be responsible for daily proper care, monitor the process and, if necessary, go to the doctor themselves.
In the Lumi-Dent clinics, you will find such a treatment program that will allow you to adhere to your usual lifestyle, not to lower its quality. If the aesthetic moment is very important, the dentist will choose the correction option that will not spoil the appearance.
IDEAL BITE IN CHILDREN
We have already listed four options for the correct position of the teeth - but not always a person who does not have professional knowledge can determine the correct bite in a child by photo or description. If in doubt, just take your child to a doctor, go through an examination. Moreover, it is recommended to visit the dentist once every six months if there are no complaints and problems.
Another important point: the development of a bite in a child at any moment can go the wrong way. This is due to the loss of milk teeth, the growth of molars, some injuries and other features.
If the doctor once said that everything is in order, this does not mean that the child will grow up and he will not have any problems. Only constant monitoring by a dentist will allow you to detect a beginning problem and correct it before you have to spend a lot of time, effort and money on correction.

HOW THE CORRECT BITE OF TEETH LOOKS
If we talk about general characteristics, then with the right option there are no gaps between the jaws and individual teeth, none of the jaws protrudes forward, and the center line that runs between the incisors is approximately at the same level from below and above. An example of how the correct bite looks like, you will see in any advertisement of toothpaste, whitening or other dental products, services.
WHAT AN ANATOMIC OCCLUSION SHOULD BE
The correct bite should be such that it does not cause discomfort, does not harm the teeth, other organs and does not spoil the appearance. If you want to achieve just such an effect, Lumi-Dent clinics are the best choice!
